I am not sure if you noticed in the last few years how the free media and the Internet are influencing industries that seem to be sacred. This time I am talking about dental hygiene.
Think about it – you spend a lot of money to regularly go to your dentist, you also spend considerable amount of money to buy toothpaste and other oral hygiene products.
Without being all conspiracy type of a person, you can are that this system of dentists and corporations producing all sorts of dental products are very much interested for you to stay in this circle of constant visits. Dentists will gladly endorse products which are cleaning your teeth, but not to the point of reducing your frequency of visits.
It was around 3-4 years ago when a friend of mine alerted me to the issue of fluoride. I, being like you and many other people, simply never question this substance. After all, my dental products are all shouting about ‘increased fluoride contents’ and a ‘special layer of fluoride’, so you never think about it as being something unhealthy. My friend simply asked whether I wanted to do a quick research.
If you search for ‘what’s fluoride’, you gate all sorts of medical publications that simply copy paste the same paragraph which says that fluoride is a natural substance and that it prevents your teeth from decay.
There are way too many websites like that and I guess when you learn this from your medical school and see hundreds of mentions that say the same, you don’t question it. I don’t blame dentists, but I use wish all of us will have a bit more critical thinking sometimes. I am guilty as charged too.
When you search for it, you are also reminded that fluoride was also added to water to also help with dental hygiene. However most of the developed world already dropped this practice. If it is that good, why stop?
The issue is that fluoride that is being used in dental practices and water supply is not a chemical that is actually approved as a safe drug. Scientists elaborate on the term of ‘fluoride’ saying that it is a reduced form of a naturally occurring element called Fluorine. It is known to cause health issues to humans, when they are exposed to it too much.
Fluoride now contains a wide array of chemicals, which make this substance actually hazardous. Many big manufacturers are not even allowed to dump this chemical.
Thankfully the practice of water fluoridation has been stopped. There was ever no evidence to suggest water fluoridation helped to prevent tooth decay.
It is not great news as this substance is contaminating our environment.
I have found many references, but this website says there are in total 24 studies that show that fluoride lowers people’s IQ . I agree that it is highly unlikely to get a positive effect from a hazardous material.
The same website cited many of there studies and shows how fluoride can eat through metal and concrete. They also got a video that was captured by a hidden camera on a fluoride facility.
Now, all this made me think that there should be a product that effectively cleans my teeth, yet do it naturally. A friend of mine suggested online shopping for non fluoride toothpastes (I admit I have used Amazon to try a few) or visiting Holland and Barret in the UK.
It has been since then I have only brushed my teeth with brands that make fluoride free toothpastes.
I am not a doctor, but here are my conclusions about using fluoride free toothpaste:
- My frequency of dentist visits dropped from 3-4 a year to just 1 and only to do a regular cleaning. On my last visit my dentist actually asked me why my teeth and gums are so much better than before and said that a very minimal cleaning would be required. When I told him I am using no-fluoride toothpaste, he simply said that he only heard that they are too mild and do not do the job well. Clearly it was not true.
- No fluoride toothpastes are very different and you can try a few before you settle for what you prefer, like with any other product. I do like Jason (USA) and Urtekram (Denmark) brands, they produce a few different kinds of fluoride-free toothpastes and mouth washes. These products have very clear contents on the packaging and you can see how natural are the components, from herbal extracts, aloe vera to very logical cleaning substance of calcium carbonate.
- Companies that put ‘and now with the increased coating of fluoride’ on your dental floss are simply bastards that are programming thousands if not millions of people to think that it is not just OK but it is ‘better’ for you.
- I was advised by my dentists that my gums were bleeding too much and according to him I might need a proper treatment. I did not have a dental cover back then, so the budget was way over £5000. Thankfully, after three years of more gentle approach to my teeth, my gums are not bleeding anymore!
I am not doing to be all signing and dancing, but it works for me and the above reasons are fair enough for you to try too. Be kind to your teeth and also do not support big multinational companies that produce chemical waste and then dump it on us.
Be kind and healthy!
